CD which stands for
Compact Disc is an opticial storage media for electronic data. Standard CDs have a diameter of 120mm and a data capacity of 700MB. Although originally developed for storing audio, the technology was later adapted to include CD-ROM which is now very widely used within the computing industry.

The official name for
Audio CD is
CD-DA which stands for
CD-Digital Audio. The technical standard for the audio CD format is known as "
Red Book".
The basic specifications state that
- Maximum playing time is 74 minutes (including pauses)
- Minimum duration for a track is 4 seconds
- Maximum number of tracks is 99
- Maximum number of index points (subdivisions of a track) is 99 with no maximum time limit
International Standard Recording Code (ISRC) should be included.
An audio CD can represent frequencies up to 22.05 kHz-the Nyquist frequency of the 44.1 kHz sample rate.
16 bit stereo bit rate = 1,411.2 kbit/s.
CD-ROM which is an abbreviation for
Compact Disc Read-Only Memory, which can be read by a computer but not be written to. CD-ROMs are commonly used to distribute computer software (PC or Mac), although any type of data can be stored. The standard for the CD-ROM format is known as "
Yellow Book".
